A goal in the 24th minute by Katie Chandler helped send fourth-ranked Washington University-St. Louis past Denison, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship held at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

The Bears controlled the tempo early as they registered the first four shots of the match. In the 12th minute, Chandler nearly scored the game's first goal when she sent a close-range shot on goal. However, sophomore goalie Jenny Herold made a nice play with her left leg to slow the ball down and stop it from crossing the goal line. Almost 12 minutes later, Chandler was able to find some space from roughly 20 yards out and net her seventh goal of the season.

Fifty-three second after WashU scored the go-ahead goal, senior captain Andrea Witte nearly tied the match when she sent an arcing shot that would have snuck under the crossbar if not for Lizzy Crist, who punched the ball off frame. The Big Red almost capitalized on the ensuing corner kick, but the header by junior Jessica Skelly was kicked off the line by Darcy Cunningham.

Denison had a couple opportunities early in the second half. In the 51st minute, sophomore Meg Wozniak unloaded a shot towards the upper left 90 from the top of the box that was snagged by Crist. Nearly four minutes later, junior Meg Sutter settled a loose ball out of a scrum, stepped around a charging defender and ripped a shot towards the lower right corner that was blocked aside by the Bears' defense.

In the 64th minute, Logan Berlet rifled a long shot that went left of the post off a failed clear from a corner kick. DU's final strong push came with six minutes to play when Skelly corralled an initial Sutter shot and sent a right-footed flick just wide of the net.

Skelly paced the Big Red with three of the team's nine shots, while Sutter had two. Herold finished the game with six saves, including back-to-back stops inside the final 40 seconds of play to keep it a one-goal match.

Seven different Washington University players recorded two shots, including the goal scorer Chandler. She, along with Rachel Mickelson, put both attempts on frame. Crist made four saves in the win.

With the win, the Bears (18-2) advance to the sectional round of the 2015 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, while Denison caps off a stellar season with a 16-5 record.
