Box Score The Denison field hockey team scored six times in the first half en route to earning a 7-1 victory over Transylvania on Friday evening at Piper Stadium in Granville.
The Big Red need just one minute and 40 seconds to get on the board against the Pioneers. After drawing the first penalty corner of the match, sophomore Jen Durbin inserted a pass to Emily Marlatt at the top of the shooting circle. Marlatt put the ball in motion and ripped a shot into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season.
Durbin got into the scoring column in the eighth minute when she tapped a shot pass from Elsie Humes into the back of a wide open cage. The sophomore's seventh goal of the year increased DU's lead to 2-0. Just two shots and five minutes later, senior Britta Marden added her sixth goal of the season after weaving through the Pioneer defense.
Junior Abby Martone added back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 28th minutes to extend Denison's lead to 5-0. Tori Rapillo got the helper on the first Martone score after she fed a pass that was one-timed into the goal from the left wing. Senior Sadie Conley earned an assist on the junior's second goal of the game when she had her entry pass redirected past goalie Allyson Benz. The final goal of the first half came 54 seconds after the second Martone tally. Freshman Lucy Pearsall sent a backhand shot into the lower left corner at 28:01.
Transylvania broke up the shutout bid in the 54th minute when Kayla Thurlow recorded her first goal of the season. Senior defender Allie Bacon closed out the scoring in the 61st minute when she picked up her second career goal. Bacon picked up the loose ball, worked her way through the defense and sent a shot into the lower right corner for the unassisted tally.
Denison outshot Transy 29-6 and earned 19 penalty corners compared to just five second half corners for the Pioneers. The Big Red also had a 19-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Martone's game-high two goals came on three shots, while Pearsall had one goal on a team-leading seven attempts. Marlatt and Marden each had four shots and a goal, while Durbin collected a goal and an assist. Freshman Ellen Westfall didn't face a shot en route to her sixth win of the season, while Maria Taylor recorded DU's four saves in the second half.
Thurlow scored on her lone shot of the contest, while Alyson Bergman had two attempts to lead the Pioneers. Benz suffered the loss after making nine saves and allowing six goals in 31:35. Sidney Lococo played the final 38:25, allowing a goal and stopping three shots.
With the win, Denison improves to 6-4, while Transylvania falls to 0-6 on the season. The Big Red resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (Oct. 6) when they travel to Wooster for a 4:30 p.m. match.
