Denison shuts out Yeowomen

Box Score

Denison field hockey improved to 8-4 on the season following a 3-0 victory over Oberlin College from Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.  The Big Red scored twice in the first half and once in the second to complete the shutout win.

DU's first goal of the match came in the 12th minute of play when Elsie Humes took a shot that was redirected into the cage by Jen Durbin for her team-best eighth goal of the season.

In the 21st minute, Oberlin would be whistled for a foul in the crease which awarded DU freshman Lucy Pearsall a penalty stroke.  Pearsall's stroke was successful and Denison went into the intermission leading 2-0.

It took only 24 seconds for Denison to strike in the second half as Abby Martone crossed a ball to Humes who put it home with a nifty one-timer.  The goal was the third this season for Humes.

The Big Red controlled possession throughout the contest, finishing with a 30-4 advantage in the shot department.  Oberlin goalkeeper Maggie Gossiaux ended with 15 saves while Claire Miller chipped in a defensive save.

Denison was led in shots by Marten who finished with eight.  Martone and Pearsall both attempted five for DU.  Freshman goalie Ellen Westfall had three saves. She got a little help from classmate Virginia Hamilton who notched a defensive save in the 62nd minute of play, preserving the shutout.

The win moves the Big Red's record to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  Their next contest will be this Tuesday, Oct. 13, when they take on Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio at 4:30 p.m.
