5-0 the hard way; Denison tops Hiram

Box Score

Denison shrugged off a sluggish start by outscoring Hiram 17-0 in the second half.  The result was a 17-6 win over the Terriers in front of 1,822 at Piper Stadium in Granville.  The victory moves Denison's record to 5-0. It also marks the team's ninth consecutive win dating back to the 2014 season.

The two teams entered the game with opposing records, with Denison at 4-0 and Hiram at 0-4.  Contrary to the facts, Hiram looked more like the undefeated team in the early goings.  Tailback Danny Robinson broke off a 20-yard touchdown run to put his team up 6-0 with 3:11 to play in the first quarter.  In fact, if not for two interceptions thrown by Hiram in the end zone and a missed 42-yard field goal that bonked of the left upright, the Terriers could have held a double-digit halftime lead.

Instead, Hiram took its 6-0 lead into the intermission with Denison set to receive the opening kickoff of the third quarter.  On the first play of the drive, first-year quarterback Canaan Gebele completed a 16-yard pass to rookie tailback Cody Farley for a first down.  On the next play, Gebele went up top to Dushawn Brown who caught the ball at the 5-yard line and ran it in for DU's first score.  The 42-yard touchdown was the seventh of the season for Brown.

Later in the quarter, Gebele would orchestrate a 10-play 78-yard drive that he capped off by calling his own number from 6-yards out. The key play of this scoring drive was a 37-yard pass to Brown that got Denison down to the Hiram 14-yard line.

The night's scoring was capped off by a 22-yard Conor Dunn field goal in the fourth quarter.

Denison entered the contest ranked ninth in the nation in total defense and they did nothing to hurt their ranking as they allowed just 245 yards and six points to Hiram.  Through five games, opponents have scored only 46 points while averaging only 225 yards of offense.  Andrew Baird, Joel Lohoua and Ryan Zinkula all finished with interceptions for DU.  Brice Winans recorded a career-high 14 tackles while Zach Pewitt and Anthony Sernus each posted 10 tackles apiece.

Zach Neufeld had one sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss while Lucas Romick turned in an eight tackle, 1.5 tackle for a loss performance.

Gebele came in relief of starter Tommy Iammarino in the first quarter and finished 16-of-21 for 178 yards and one touchdown pass.  He also led the team with 49 rushing yards and a score off 13 carries.  Brown set yet another Denison career mark as he passed Steve Garnett '97 as the program's all-time leader in receptions with 172.  Brown finished with 11 catches for 161 yards and one TD.  On the year, he leads the team with 35 receptions for 638 yards and seven touchdowns while also ranking among the national leaders in all three categories.

Robinson carried the ball 26 times for 109 yards and one score for Hiram.  Alec Wells was 8-for-19 passing for 78 yards and one INT.  Jaylen Dinard led the Terriers with three catches for 52 yards.

Next Saturday, the Big Red will travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Wittenberg Tigers.
