Second half run sends Tigers past Big Red women

Box Score

Wittenberg utilized a 20-3 run over the final 8:45 to steal a 41-39 victory out of the grasps of the Denison Big Red on Saturday at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Midway through the second half the Big Red looked to have the game in control when they opened up their largest lead of the afternoon after a pair of Gabrielle Nottage free throws.

With 6:58 to play, Wittenberg's Katelyn Harlamos knocked down a 3-pointer after a steal by Riley McDonald.  Harlamos' shot added some gasoline to the fire and now the Tigers trailed by only six at 36-30.

With four minutes to play, Harlamos would knock down another 3-pointer to get Wittenberg to within one at 36-35.  The Big Red would answer at the other end when Taylor Lindquist hit a 3-pointer of her own, quelling the Wittenberg rally temporarily.

Wittenberg would tie the game at 39-39 with one minute to play after a pair of Darbie Zirkle free throws.  Denison's Kellie Arter would come up dry on a 3-point try at the other end and Wittenberg would secure the defensive rebound.

The Tigers would run the game clock down to 20 seconds before Harlamos's 3-point try missed.  The play of the game followed as Michelle Brunswick's offensive rebound gave the Tigers another chance.  Brunswick would find Harlamos on the elbow for a 17-footer that hit nothing but net.  Harlamos was also fouled on the shot.  Her attempt at a three-point play was denied at the line as Lindquist secured the rebound to give DU one last chance to tie or win.

Trailing 41-39 with the shot clock off, Nottage would take a 3-pointer with three seconds left that was off the mark.  Wittenberg's Harlamos was there with the win-clinching rebound as time expired.

Harlamos scored eight of her team-high 10 points during the Wittenberg comeback.

Denison was led in scoring by Jordan Holmes who finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.  Lindquist was 4-of-5 from the field and finished with 10 points while Mary Margaret Habel chipped in six points.

Denison held Wittenberg to 16-of-62 shooting (.258) while the Big Red shot 34 percent (15-of-44).  In the second half, five offensive rebounds for the Tigers and 17 turnovers on the Big Red were the key contributing factors to the Wittenberg win.  Twenty-one of Wittenberg's 41 points came off DU turnovers.

DU falls to 10-10 overall and 6-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wittenberg improves to 15-5 and 7-3 in conference play.  The Big Red will try and get back on track on Wednesday (Feb. 4) when they host Oberlin College at 8 p.m.
