Big Red upended at Kenyon

Box Score

Kenyon College got 16 points from Bailey Dominquez and a few big shots down stretch as the Ladies held off the Denison Big Red, 61-52, from Tomisch Arena in Gambier.

Denison and Kenyon played a back-and-forth first half and it wasn't until the closing minutes of the opening period when the home team began to take charge.  Kenyon would close out the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 32-22 lead into the intermission.

While turnovers plagued the Big Red in the first half, that problem would be remedied in the second.  Consecutive baskets by Jordan Holmes pulled DU to within six with 6:15 to play.  A missed 3-point try by Kenyon would allow the Big Red to cut a little further into the Ladies' lead as Mary Margaret Habel knocked down a pair of free throws with just over five minutes to play.

With 4:18 to play, Kenyon's Bailey Dominguez connected on a jumper.  That would spark a 2:33 scoring drought for both teams that wouldn't be snapped until KC's Lauren Kriete hit a clutch 3-pointer from the wing that put her team back up nine with 1:45 to play.

Denison would get consecutive field goals by Holmes and Taylor Lindquist to make it a five-point lead with 1:03 to play.  The Big Red put on the full-court press and seconds after narrowly breaking that press, Kenyon's Sidney Cera saw an opening and drove to the basket.  Cera would covert the layup after being fouled by a DU defender.  Cera would convert the 3-point play at the line with 35 seconds left, putting the finishing touches on the win for Kenyon.

Holmes and Kellie Arter led Denison with 13 points apiece.  Holmes was 5-of-7 from the field and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.  She also posted a game-high 13 rebounds and six blocked shots in 36 minutes.  Arter was 3-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.  Arter hit all four free throws and added three steals.  Gabrielle Nottage chipped in eight points and Lindquist finished with seven to round out Denison's leaders.

Dominiquez' 16 points paced the home team while Avery Anderson added 11 points.

Denison held a 37-32 advantage on the boards and both teams shot a similar percentage from the field as the Big Red hit 14-of-45 (.311) and Kenyon was 19-for-53 (.358).  The big difference came from long range where Kenyon was 10-of-18 (.556) while Denison hit just 5-of-15 (.333) 3-point tries.

The loss drops Denison's record to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Kenyon improves to 4-10 and 2-4 in conference play.  The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 17) when they travel to Meadville, Pa. for a 1 p.m. tip-off against Allegheny College.
