Box Score The Big Red women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season after dropping a 5-0 decision to 13th-ranked Thomas More Saints on Saturday afternoon in Crestview Hills, Ky.
The nationally-ranked Saints jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead behind goals by Julia Flagge-Echols and Abby Stadtmiller in the 25th and 36th minutes, respectively. Those successful shots were two of the six attempted by Thomas More in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the home team added three more goals which included second tallies by both Flagge-Echols and Stadtmiller. Olivia Huber, who assisted on the eventual game-winning goal, scored in the 51st minute, while the Flagge-Echols and Stadtmiller goals came in the 62nd and 83rd minutes.
The Saints outshot DU 12-4 and attempted the only three corner kicks of the game. Jessica Skelly, Naomi Barker, Jacquie Graham and Drew Wentzel each registered a shot. Freshman Jenny Herold suffered her first loss of the season after allowing five goals in 84 minutes of play. Herold made all four Big Red saves during that time in net.
Thomas More keepers Megan Barton and Christy Smith each played a half in the win. Barton picked up her third win of the year, while Smith made two second-half stops.
The loss drops the Big Red to 2-1, while the Saints improve to 4-0. Denison returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 7) at Hanover College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
