Big Red blanks Quakers

Box Score

Victory number one of the 2014 is in the books following Denison's 4-0 triumph over visiting Earlham College on Saturday afternoon from Granville.  The Big Red posted a pair of tallies in the first half and two more in the second en route to the shutout.

DU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Molly Chapman sent a shot from the top of the circle that was saved by Earlham's Brynna Foreman.  The ball bounced back into the field of play where Sara Hofmann was positioned to deposit the goal.  The goal was not only the first of the year for Hofmann, but the first of 2014 for Denison who was coming off a pair of narrow shutout defeats versus nationally ranked opponents.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Denison until the 28th minute when Elsie Humes gathered a loose ball and lifted it into the cage for her first goal of the season.

Three minutes into the second half the Big Red were granted a penalty corner situation.  After Jen Durbin played the corner in to Britta Marden, her shot from the top of the arc would connect with Hoffman's stick that would then re-direct to the stick of Durbin for the precisely executed goal at the 37:55 mark.

Six minutes later, Denison's final goal would come from Chapman from just in front of the Earlham cage.

The Big Red held a 25-4 advantage in shots while dominating short corner situations 15-4.  Earlham goalie, Foreman, finished with six saves.  The Quakers also got three defensive saves from Heather Brock, Sam Bielanski, and Bailey Henizen.

Denison was led in shots by Chapman with six.  Marden followed with four shots while Durbin and Alex Berman chipped in three shots.

DU will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 14) when they host DePauw at 11 a.m.  The Tigers are coming off a 2-1 loss this morning to Kenyon College.
