Box Score The Denison women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback at 14th-ranked Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field in Chicago, Ill. With the loss, the Big Red falls to 4-2 on the year with both of the losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents.
Despite outshooting the Maroons 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes, Denison found itself in a 1-0 hole at the intermission after Meghan Derken scored her second goal of the season in the 19th minute. Sara Kwan and Mia Calamari both assisted on the Derken score. Chicago extended its lead in the 54th minute when Nicole Mullen added an insurance tally off an assist from Derken. Over the final 36 minutes, the Big Red unloaded four shots, two of which were corralled by second-half keeper Jacinda Reid.
Both teams attempted 14 shots in the match, while Denison held a distinct 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Six of the Big Red's corner attempts came in the first period. DU also committed twice as many fouls in the contest (16-8).
Meg Wozniak attempted a team-best four shots, including two on goal, while two of Ashlyn Flaherty's three attempts were on frame. Maddy Regan, Anne Denz and Grace Murray also registered two shots on Saturday. Freshman goalie Jenny Herold made three saves in 90 minutes of work.
Mullen finished with three shots and a goal for the Maroons (5-0), while Derken and Calamari each had two attempts. Mallory Morse improved to 3-0 on the year after making four saves in the first half, while Reid made three stops in the second stanza.
Denison returns home next Wednesday (Sept. 17) to host regionally-ranked Ohio Northern at 7 p.m. on Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.
