Box Score No. 4 Christopher Newport broke a scoreless tie in the 39th minute of play. A second goal with just over eight minutes remaining would be enough to hold off Denison, 2-0, in a neutral site match from the campus of Washington and Lee University.
Denison came out of the gates strong, forcing four penalty corner attempts in the first six minutes of play. Newcomer Chloe Dikeou's shot off the final corner attempt was saved by CNU goalie Bailey Lien. Three minutes later, Elsie Humes' shot attempt would be turned away by Lien.
The two teams went into the intermission with the game scoreless as the Captains held a 7-4 advantage in shots.
Four minutes into the second half, CNU would convert on what was its third consecutive penalty corner. Alexa Hendrickson's pass would find Belle Tunstall for the eventual game-winner.
In the 62nd minute, Tunstall would assist on Lauren Cheatham's goal, setting the final at 2-0.
Denison attempted eight shots, led by Molly Chapman and Dikeou who each ended with two. Big Red first-year goalie Audrey Miller-Foreman finished with two saves while facing four shots on goal. CNU's Cheatham led her team with five shot attempts. Lien and Savanah Cummings split time in goal. The pair combined for three saves.
Denison will return on Sunday to face 15th ranked Catholic University from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
