Offense erupts in Manchester rout

Box Score

The Denison women's soccer team had nine different players record a goal and 11 registered a point in an 11-0 rout of Manchester University on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

Saturday's win marked the fifth time in program history a Big Red squad has scored at least 11 times in one match. The last came in a victory over Hiram on Sept. 17, 1992 when Denison scored a school-record 12 goals. The previous 11-goal performance was an 11-0 win over Otterbein in 1990.

Junior Andrea Witte opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she took a pass from sophomore Jessica Skelly and buried a shot behind Emily Willmann. Witte's second goal of the season proved to be the game-winning tally.

The Big Red went on to score four more times over a 22 minute span in the first half. The home team received goals from sophomore Ashlyn Flaherty, freshman Meg Wozniak, junior Keara Kilbane and sophomore Jacquie Graham before the half came to an end. At the break, DU held a 21-2 advantage in shots.

Senior Caitlin Cheverine quickly increased the Denison lead in the second period with two goals in the first 11 minutes. Skelly also had a pair of goals in the second period, while sophomore Clare Culligan and rookie Drew Wentzel also found the back of the net. All four of those goals were unassisted tallies.

Skelly paced the scoring with two goals and two assists, while Cheverine also beat the goalie twice. Witte and Wentzel each had a goal and an assist, while senior Allison Scarlott and sophomore Naomi Barker each logged an assist.

Denison finished the game with a 40-5 advantage in shots, with 24 of those attempts landing on frame.  DU also took all 12 corner kicks in the game and committed nine fouls compared to just three by the Spartans.

The freshmen goalie tandem of Jenny Herold and Amelia Hitchens combined to post the Big Red's first shutout of the season.  Herold made three saves in nearly 75 minutes, while Hitchens had one save in the final 15 minutes of play. Willmann played all 90 minutes for Manchester and stopped 11 of the 24 shots on net.

With the win, DU improves to 2-0 while the Spartans fall to 0-2 in 2014.  Denison returns to action next weekend when they take on a pair of NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a season ago. The Big Red travels to Crestview Hills, Ky. on Saturday (Sept. 6) to take on 13th-ranked Thomas More. They will continue their road trip on Sunday (Sept. 7) with a match at Hanover. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
