The 12th-ranked Washington & Lee Generals earned a berth in the third round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament following a 13-5 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

Washington & Lee opened the scoring with a Carly Taglienti unassisted goal at 25:23. The Big Red answered less than two minutes later when Piper Logan found Carol Allen for the game-tying score. After a five and a half minute scoring drought, the Generals rattled off six goals in roughly 11 minutes to build a 7-1 advantage.

Denison's Erin Keller broke up the run with an unassisted tally as 3:36. W&L answered one minute and four seconds later with a free-position goal to take a six-goal advantage into the break. The Generals' Taglienti and Margaret Klein opened the second-half scoring with goals at 22:35 and 19:04, respectively.

DU senior Lauren Adams shrunk the deficit to 10-3 with an unassisted goal at 16:19. Now trailing 11-3, 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year Claire Ludlow took a pass from junior Whitney Powel at midfield and burst through the Washington & Lee defense towards goalie Cara Mulligan. Ludlow made a move and ripped a shot past Mulligan to close the gap to 11-4.

However, W&L's Sammy Yates and Hayley Soutter each scored inside the final 10 minutes to secure the victory. Allen recorded the last goal of the game, and unassisted tally, with 1:18 left on the clock.

Allen finished the game with two goals on three shots, while Ludlow, Adams and Keller also found the back of the net. Junior Molly Chapman had three of DU's eight draw controls, while Powel and Isabel Swicklik collected three ground balls each. Swicklik also forced three turnovers. Sophomore goalie Laura Van Horn made six saves for the Big Red

Taglienti scored three times and added an assist to pace the General offense, while Klein, Sara Holland and Soutter also chipped in two goals apiece. Melissa Coggins came off the bench to dish out a game-high four assists. Meade Brewster posted six draw controls, while Leanne Stone and Olive Waxter collected five ground balls each. Mulligan improved to 17-2 on the year after making five saves in goal.

The Generals outshot Denison 24-12 and had a 12-8 advantage in draw controls. They also were successful on 20-of-22 clear attempts, while DU went 12-for-23 in clears. The periodical rain showers forced both team to commit 46 combined turnovers.

The first year under head coach Amanda Daniels ends at 13-5 for the Big Red. This season marked the 18th North Coast Athletic Conference championship in school history and the 16th NCAA Tournament appearance for the Big Red.

Washington & Lee improves to 17-2 and will face the winner of The College of New Jersey and Susquehanna University in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
