Box Score The College of Wooster shot just 27 percent from the field as Denison utilized an 11-2 run to close out the first half with a 17-point lead. That lead would expand to as much as 31 in the second half as the Big Red rolled over the Fighting Scots, 71-41, from Livingston Gym in Granville.
Prior to the contest, Denison honored its four senior members, Mikaela Freundlich, Paige Williams, Aubrey Rogers, and Gretchen Staubach and that foursome would account for 24 points and 22 rebounds as the Big Red moved to 16-5 on the season.
Denison's 11-2 run to close out the first half would be topped as the two teams began the second half. This time it would be a 20-6 run from Denison that would put the game away with just over 10 minutes to play.
Earlier in the season, first-year Jordan Holmes broke the North Coast Athletic Conference's single-season record for blocked shots and this afternoon she joined more elite company by breaking the NCAA Division III Freshman blocked shots record. Holmes broke the freshman record of 120 blocks in a season that was set in 1995 by Eastern Mennonite's Laurie Miller. For the game, Holmes finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks. She is averaging 10.0 ppg, 14.2 rpg and 6.3 bpg in 20 games this season.
Holmes was one of four DU players to reach double-figures in scoring. Staubach followed with 11 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. Mary Margaret Habel scored 11 points to go along with five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench, and Kellie Arter followed with 10 points that helped the Denison bench outscore Wooster's 38-12. Rogers would contribute to Denison's bench output with one of her best games of the season. The senior finished with nine points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes.
DU dominated the glass, 51-31 and committed 10 turnovers to Wooster's 14. The Big Red connected on 28-of-63 shots (.444) while Wooster hit on 15-of-55 shots (.273). The Scots were led in scoring by Lauren Hancher's 14 points.
At 16-5 overall and 8-4 in the NCAC, Denison sits in third place in the conference standings, trailing only Ohio Wesleyan (9-4), and DePauw (12-0). The Big Red has three games remaining on its regular season slate and they will hit the road on Wednesday (Feb. 12) for a 6 p.m. tip-off at Kenyon College.
