Box Score Wittenberg got 21 points from Darbie Zirkle and Katelyn Haralamos as the Tigers pulled away in the second half for a 64-56 victory over the Denison Big Red from Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison junior Kellie Arter scored 16 points in the first half thanks to a 4-of-7 shooting performance from 3-point range. Arter's big first half sent Denison into the second leading 30-28. The two teams would play an even opening eight minutes of the second stanza and with 8:23 to play, the Big Red found themselves leading 45-39 after Mary Margaret Habel split a pair of free throws.
Momentum would swing in favor of the Tigers as Zirkle drained a 3-pointer from the corner. That would spark an 11-3 run for the Tigers that resulted in a 50-48 lead with 5:27 to play.
Over the final seven minutes, Denison would struggle to convert at the offensive end. Despite coming up dry on their final eight shot attempts, they did get to the free throw line. Over the last five minutes of the game all eight of DU's points came at the charity stripe. However, going 8-of-14 over that same stretch left the door open for Wittenberg to extend its lead. Haralamos' 3-pointer with 3:49 to play that put her team up five would prove to be the biggest shot of the game.
Haralamos scored 21 points by going 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Eleven of her 21 points came in the second half. Zirkle added five assists, four steals and five rebounds to her 21-point effort. She played 38 minutes and shot 6-of-14 from the field.
Arter paced Denison with 22 points while going 7-of-15 in 35 minutes. Gabrielle Nottage added 12 points in 29 minutes while Jordan Holmes led all players on the glass with 17 rebounds. She would also contribute nine points, five assists and six blocks in 39 minutes.
Denison committed 20 turnovers that the Tigers manufactured into 21 points. Wittenberg turned the ball over 17 times that led to nine points from the Big Red. Despite Holmes' big day, the Tigers edged the Big Red on the glass, 39-36.
The Big Red fall to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wittenberg improves to 6-3 and 1-1 in conference play. Denison will take a two week break for finals and Christmas, returning on Dec. 28 when they take on Muskingum in Bluffton, Ohio at 5 p.m.
