Box Score Maddie Breschi's goal in the 37th minute lifted Kenyon College to a 1-0 victory over Denison in the championship match of the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at McBride Field in Gambier, Ohio.
The two conference rivals combined for six shots in the opening 35 minutes of play. The top-seeded Ladies held a 4-2 advantage in shots in the first half, while the third-seeded Big Red attempted all four corners of the period. DU held the advantage in shots until a late flurry by Christine Bloom and Rachel Hall swung the advantage into the home team's favor. Denison's final penalty corner of the period came with no time left on the clock. Junior captain Elsie Humes inserted the ball, but a slip at the top of the shooting circle brought the half to the end.
Kenyon took advantage of its first penalty corner of the game in the 37th minute when Breschi ripped a shot into the goal off a pass from Hall. The Ladies almost made it a two-goal game in the 58th minute, but a heads up play by freshman defender Kirsten Audette kept the ball from crossing the goal line.
Denison nearly came up with the equalizer with just under two minutes to play. Sophomore Abby Martone ripped a through ball from roughly 35 yards out. With senior Sara Hofmann charging towards the goal, Kenyon goalie Sarah Speroff came off her line to kick the ball away. However, Speroff missed on her attempt to clear and the ball trickled into the goal. Despite protest from several Big Red players, the referees ruled the ball was not touched and the game remained 1-0 in favor of the Ladies. The Big Red spent the most of the final two minutes in their offensive half, but failed to register a shot.
Kenyon held an 8-4 advantage in shots, while Denison attempted six of the game's nine penalty corners. The Big Red posted the only two saves of the match.
Four different players registered a shot for DU. Captains Molly Chapman, Alex Berman and Humes each recorded an attempt, while freshman Emily Marlatt had the fourth. Denison goalie Audrey Miller-Foreman made one stop, while Audette had the other Big Red save.
At the conclusion of the match, Chapman, Berman and Britta Marden were named to the NCAC All-Tournament team. Denison's season comes to an end with a 13-7 record. Kenyon will take a 19-2 record into the NCAA Tournament, their first national tournament appearance since 2007.
