Box Score Kellie Arter scored 20 points and Gabrielle Nottage's jumper with eight seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime, but Carnegie Mellon would outscore the Big Red 9-4 in the extra frame, resulting in a 65-60 win for the Tartans. Denison will face Miami-Middletown in Sunday's consolation game from Marietta College's Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot.
Denison took a 9-0 lead to open the contest and led by as many as 15 early in the first half thanks to a hot start from Arter. The Lancaster, Ohio native scored 15 of her team-high 20 points in the first half by going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Tartans would make a charge late in the half, outscoring DU 13-5 over the final four minutes to take a 33-31 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the lead would change hands frequently. With 1:08 to play, Carnegie Mellon's Lisa Murphy converted down low, putting her team on top by three. At the other end, Denison's Jordan Holmes was fouled after snagging an offensive rebound after an Alyx Ingram miss. Holmes split the pair of free throws to get Denison to within two.
The Tartans would run the clock down to the 17 second mark before Holmes managed a steal, giving the ball back to the Big Red. Without calling a timeout, Nottage would knock down a jumper at the other end, tying the game at 56-56. CMU would quickly inbound and Lindsay Poss' potential game-winning layup was rejected by Holmes as time expired, forcing overtime.
In the overtime, neither team would score over the first two minutes of play. A layup by Arter would give Denison its first lead since the 5:32 mark of the second half. CMU would proceed to go on a 9-2 run to close out the overtime period.
Holmes finished with 10 points, 18 rebounds, seven steals and six blocked shots in 34 minutes of action. Arter played all but two minutes of this contest and was one shy of her career-high in points with 20. She was 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Arter also chipped in four steals. Nottage and Mary Margaret Habel both added eight points apiece to round out Denison's scoring leaders.
For Carnegie Mellon (6-1), Lisa Murphy scored 28 points by going 12-for-19 from the field. She also added 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Poss scored 14 points and paced the Tartans with 14 rebounds.
Denison will return on Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on Miami-Middletown from Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio.
