Denison scores 34 unanswered at Oberlin

Box Score

Denison evened its record to 4-4 following a decisive 34-7 win over Oberlin College on Saturday night at the Knowlton Athletic Complex.  Oberlin took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, but the Big Red rattled off 34 unanswered points for the win.

Trailing by a touchdown entering the second quarter, senior quarterback Brandon Sklenar would lead DU on a 10-play, 76-yard drive that was capped off by a 9-yard scoring pass to Charlie Mueller with 10:26 to play in the half.

On their next possession, Sklenar went downfield to current North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, DuShawn Brown for a 41-yard completion.  Four plays later, Everett McGregor scored on an 8-yard run, giving the Big Red a 14-7 lead.

After the McGregor TD, the Denison defense would force its fourth-straight three-and-out, giving the Denison offense the ball on its own 46-yard line.  On first down, Sklenar looked for Brown who hauled in the pass and scored from 54-yards out, putting DU up 21-7 with 3:42 left in the second quarter.

Brown entered the second half with five receptions for 110 yards, marking his third 100-yard receiving game of the season.

Denison's final 13 points would come in the third quarter as McGregor scored on a 23-yard scamper that closed out a 9-play drive.  On their next possession, after a 55-yard pass from Sklenar to Mueller, Sklenar called his own number and ran the ball in from 4-yards out.

Sklenar was 16-for-28 for 256 yards and two touchdown passes.  Brown ended the night with eight grabs for 131 yards and a score.  Through eight games, Brown has amassed 928 receiving yards, which is the third-highest total in Denison history.  His eight receptions broke Denison's single-season record with 64 receptions.  The DU single-season record for receiving yards is 1,086 yards set by Ben Fortkamp in 1997.  He needs only 31 yards to pass Josh Jirgens (963 yards in 2001) for second place.

On the ground, McGregor toted the ball 18 times for a career-high 86 yards and two scores.  Sklenar added 64 yards on eight carries.

Freshman safety Joe Weidenbach led the team in tackles with 11 and had an interception that he returned for 25 yards in the third quarter.  Andrew Baird contributed nine tackles and Anthony Sernus added seven stops.

The defense held Oberlin to just 170 yards of total offense while the Big Red churned out 428 yards with 256 coming through the air and 172 on the ground.

Denison will close out its home schedule next Saturday (Nov. 8) when they host Allegheny College at 1 p.m. from Piper Stadium.
