Box Score Denison ran their winning streak to six following a 4-1 victory over Wittenberg on Tuesday afternoon from Piper Stadium. Powered by three first half goals while playing through a driving rain, the Big Red would hang on in the second half despite some inspired play by the Tigers.
Senior Molly Chapman set the tone in the 11th minute of play when she accepted a short corner from Sara Hofmann, dribbled around a defender and beat the goalie for the first goal of the contest.
Six minutes later DU would strike again when Britta Marden sent a cross to the waiting stick of Elsie Humes who was stationed at the corner of the cage. The same tandem would put another tally on the scoreboard just over one minute later when Humes got herself in great position, getting in front of the goalie only to receive another excellent pass from Marden resulting in Denison's third goal of the match. The goal was Humes' seventh of the season and her sixth in the last two contests.
In the second half the rain moved through and Wittenberg went on the offensive. Over the final 35 minutes they outshot the Big Red 7-4 but managed only one goal in the 66th minute when Megan Loofbourrow scored after a penalty corner.
Three minutes later, Chapman would strike again with a ferocious slap shot from just inside the shooting circle. That would be Chapman's second goal of the day and her fifth of the season.
Denison outshot the Tigers 14-11 and the two teams tied in corner attempts with eight apiece. Audrey Miller-Foreman turned in three saves for the Big Red while Chapman added one defensive save in the second half. For Wittenberg, Laura Jansing posted six saves in 54 minutes of relief for starting goalie Sarah Brownell.
Wittenberg falls to 5-7 and 4-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while the Big Red improves to 7-3 and 7-1 in league play. DU hits the road on Saturday (Oct. 11) for a 12 p.m. start at Earlham College.
