DePauw grinds out win over Big Red

Box Score

Amen Galley rushed for 113 yards and J.D. Robinson caught two touchdown passes from Matt Hunt as DePauw held on for a 27-15 win over Denison in Greencastle, Ind.

The loss drops the Big Red to 2-3 on the season, while DePauw improves to 3-1.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first when Hunt found Robinson on a 4-yard pass, closing out a 7-play 94-yard drive that was set up by a 58-yard run by Galley on the first play from scrimmage.

The Big Red offense would stall on its first three possessions, but the defense would get Denison on the board when freshman linebacker Percy Roberts tackled Hunter Logan in the end zone for a safety.

The Big Red would take over possession on their own 32-yard line after the free kick.  Following a failed 3rd and 5 pass attempt, a wild snap from center on the fourth down punt would give the Tigers the ball on Denison's 6-yard line.  Two plays later, Hunt would connect with Robinson on an 11-yard touchdown.

Denison would come back with its first touchdown of the day when Colin Morris broke free on 4th and 1 for a 24-yard TD run, making the score 14-9 in favor of the home team.

A second special teams miscue would come after the Big Red defense forced a DePauw three-and-out.  On the punt, Denison's Andrew Baird would fumble and the Tigers recovered in Big Red territory.  DePauw would turn that turnover into a 19-yard field goal by Marko Adams, sending them into the locker room with a 17-9 lead.

Adams would boot his second field goal of the game on DePauw's first possession of the second half, lifting them to a 20-9 advantage.

Denison would begin its ensuing drive on the 8-yard line after a personal foul on the kickoff.  Facing 3rd and 3 from their own 25-yard line, Brandon Sklenar would be intercepted by DePauw's Cody Baker.  The Tigers would give the ball right back to Denison on their first play from scrimmage as Hunt's pass was picked off by Emerson Thacker at the 31-yard line.

The Big Red would proceed to go on a methodical drive powered by the running game and some key third down completions by Sklenar.  Facing 3rd and 4 from the DePauw 11-yard line, Will Longthorne jumped in front of Sklenar's pass and returned the interception 24-yards.

That turnover would prove to be the game-changer as the Tigers' Jack Gruber would score via a 6-yard run four minutes later, increasing their lead to 27-9.

Denison would complete the scoring with 1:21 remaining when Sklenar found Hunter Winans on a 10-yard touchdown pass, setting the final at 27-15.

Sklenar was 21-for-39 passing for 180 yards and one touchdown.  He also rushed for 60 yards.  Morris paced Denison on the ground with 17 carries for 75 yards.  Winans led the receiving corps with eight grabs for 76 yards.

DePauw was led by Galley's 113 yards off 22 carries.  The quarterback, Hunt, rushed for 61 yards but passed for only 38 yards.  He still managed two touchdown passes while going 8-for-15.

The Big Red will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 11) when they host No. 16 Wittenberg at 7 p.m. from Piper Stadium.
