Denison outlasts Hendrix rally

Box Score

Denison fended off a pair of penalty corner attempts from Hendrix as time expired, resulting in a 2-1 non-conference win over the Warriors from Piper Stadium in Granville.

Leading 1-0 in the waning minutes of the second half, Hendrix didn't attempt a shot until the 56th minute of play.  In the 60th minute, Molly Chapman would score in a slap shot from just inside the striking circle.  Chapman's goal came via a push pass from Abby Martone off a penalty corner.  The goal was Chapman's seventh of the season.

Four minutes later, Hendrix would get on the board when Debbie Crawford took a shot that was saved by Denison goalie Audrey Miller-Foreman.  The ball went off Miller-Foreman's pads and Crawford was there to stick the put-back.

Denison remained in possession until the final minute of regulation when Hendrix advanced the ball into their half of the field.  With 12 seconds left Hendrix was awarded a penalty corner after a whistle on a Denison defender.  The Warriors chose to let the clock run out and attempt the corner with no time of the clock.

The first was pushed by Lauren Shklanko and Morgan Fires shot attempt was blocked.  Officials would call another foul on Denison, awarding a second short corner for Hendrix.  The Shklanko to Fires play was on again, and this time Fires got around Denison's goalie and took a shot that appeared to be going into the left corner of DU's goal.  First-year fullback Jane Higley was in good position and managed to make the defensive save while clearing the ball from the circle, preserving the win for Denison.

That marked the first defensive save of the season for Higley and just the fifth shot of the match for Hendrix.  Denison would outshoot the Warriors 24-5 while winning the penalty corner battle 14-2.  Both of Hendrix's penalty corners attempts would come with no time left on the clock.

Sophomore forward, Martone, had a hand in both Big Red goals.  She scored the first by controlling a loose ball after Emily Marlatt's shot was saved by Gabryele Pochron. That marked the fifth goal of the season for Martone.  Her second half assist off Chapman's goal was her fourth of 2014.

Britta Marden led Denison with seven shots while Chapman followed with two.  Pochron led Hendrix with 13 saves in goal.

Denison improves to 9-5 while Hendrix drops to 2-12.  DU returns to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Oct. 22) when they host The College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
