Box Score The Big Red women's basketball secured its fourth-straight victory following a 66-50 win at North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wooster on Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium in Wooster, Ohio.
The Fighting Scots took their only lead of the ball game at the 12:16 mark of the opening period at 8-6. Denison answered the Suvi Puripattarapan layup with an 8-0 run to regain the advantage. The eight-point swing was part of a 17-2 run that gave DU a 13-point lead, its largest of the half. A Candise Love bucket inside the final 10 seconds of the period sent the Big Red into the locker room with a 29-19 advantage.
Wooster shrunk the deficit to five on multiple occasions in the early stages of the second half, but a 15-5 run over the course of six minutes gave Denison a 49-34 lead. The Big Red knocked down three triples during the run, including a pair from sophomore Kellie Arter. Senior Aubrey Rogers closed out the spurt with buckets on back-to-back possessions. DU maintained a double-digit lead for the final 10:21, including a 17-point advantage with just over six minutes left in regulation.
For the second time in the last three games and the fifth time this season, the Big Red converted over 50 percent from the field. Denison was 26-for-49 (53.1 percent) from the floor, including a 12-for-22 (54.5 percent) performance in the second half. DU also dominated the glass 42-29, while the Big Red reserves outscored the Wooster bench 30-8.
Gretchen Staubach led all scorers with 14 points on 6-of-8 from the floor and converted both attempts at the stripe. Staubach also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Love finished with 13 points, while freshman Jordan Holmes added a game-best 11 rebounds and nine blocks. Rogers chipped in nine points and two assists. The senior went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in 14 minutes off the bench.
Karley Walker led the Scots with 12 points, while Lauren Hancher and Maura Hall each added 10 points. Hall and Puripattarapan grabbed six boards apiece, while Puripattarapan also dished out a game-high five assists.
Denison improves to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC, while Wooster falls to 5-6 and 0-3 in league play. The Big Red wraps up their five-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. to take on defending national champion and top-ranked DePauw. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
