Gators slip past Big Red in OT

Box Score

A 10-2 run in overtime helped Allegheny pick up a 76-69 victory over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville, Ohio.

After leading for half of the second period, Denison faced a 59-54 deficit with four minutes to play following a Kaitlyn Fromknecht layup.  DU freshman Gabrielle Nottage answered with a clutch 3-pointer on the ensuing possession off an assist from senior Gretchen Staubach.  With two and half to play, Staubach knocked down a pair at the line to tie the contest at 59-59.

The Gators' Rachel Vigliotti broke the tie with a bucket, but a triple from sophomore Kellie Arter on Denison's next possession put the home team in front 62-61 with 83 ticks on the clock. After Emma Pellicano converted an old-fashioned three-point play to regain the lead, junior Mary Margaret Habel drained a pair at the free-throw line to knot the game at 64-64.

Jessica Mrdjenovich split a pair of defenders and looked to have the go-ahead score with 4.5 seconds on the clock, but a travel called on the sophomore negated the basket.  Denison's last-ditch effort came up empty, which sent the game into overtime.

After the two squads traded buckets to open the extra period, the Gators ripped off an 8-0 run over the course of three minutes that gave the visiting team a 74-66 lead with 53 seconds to play.  Arter cut the deficit to five with a three, but a pair of Rachel Vigliotti free throws secured the seven-point win.

The Big Red led by as many as 11 in the first half before taking a 32-27 lead into the locker room.  Allegheny trailed by as many as six in the second period, before clawing back into the game.

Both squads went 25-for-68 from the field (36.8 percent). The Gators were 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) at the charity stripe, while the Big Red knocked down 15-of-17 attempts (88.2 percent).  Allegheny outrebounded DU 51-39, including a 17-9 edge on the offensive glass.

Habel played a key role down low in the absence of 6-foot-1 freshman Jordan Holmes, who missed today's game due to personal reasons.  The junior post scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both career highs, in 33 minutes off the bench.  Habel went 10-for-16 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line. Candise Love chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and a career-high tying six assists, while Arter, who made second start of the season, added 13 points and two steals.

The Gators had four players score in double figures led by Mrdjenovich's 19 points.  Pellicano posted 15 points and eight rebounds, while Fromknecht recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five blocks.  Vigliotti rounded out the quartet with 13 points.

Denison falls to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Allegheny improves to 10-6 and 4-3 in league play. The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Hiram for a 6 p.m. contest.
