Denison tops Hopkins in shootout

Box Score

Denison's Alex B. Berman scored the game-tying goal with 7:13 left in regulation and sent home the eventual game-winner on Denison's fourth shootout attempt, leading the Big Red to a 3-2 win over Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.

The Big Red battled back from two, one-goal deficits in the second half to force overtime.  After taking a 1-0 lead early in the contest off a goal from Lizzy Pellicane, DU would get a pair of second-half goals from Berman that would send the contest into extra sessions.  Berman's first goal came 10 minutes into the second half on a deflection after Pellicane sent a hit from just inside the circle.  Her second score came in a similar fashion, this time on a shot that was played in by Katie McMahon.

In the two overtime periods there was no shortage on action but there was plenty of strong defensive play.  DU would attempt eight shots over the final 30 minutes while JHU took seven.  Big Red goalie Laura Campbell posted six of her career-high eight saves in overtime.  Senior midfielder Karla Dixon also preserved the tie game with a defensive save in the 97th minute.

In the shootout, Denison started things off with a conversion by Britta Marden.  Campbell would stop Johns Hopkins first attempt and McMahon would give Denison a 2-0 advantage.  The Blue Jays would miss their second attempt and that would be followed by a Denison miss.  Johns Hopkins stayed alive when Maddie Fryer scored, making it 2-1 in favor of Denison.

Berman put Denison up 3-1 and Johns Hopkins' final attempt by Allison Thompson went wide, sending DU to a hard-fought 4-3 win.

Denison ended the Blue Jays 26-24 in shots.  Alex B. Berman led the way with six shots and two goals while Tonie Michaels followed with five shots.  Pellicane scored one goal and had one assist and McMahon ended with one assist.  Defensive saves were turned in by Molly Chapman and Dixon.

In her first year as the Big Red's starting netminder, Campbell was outstanding, recording eight saves in regulation and two more in the shootout. Johns Hopkins goalie Zoey Atabek was also brilliant, turning in 16 saves in her 100 minutes of action.

Denison will not have long to recover from today's marathon as they return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Washington College at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins.
