Early goals send DU past Kenyon

Box Score

Another dominate performance by the Big Red on a picture-perfect morning at Piper Stadium resulted in a 3-1 victory for DU over Kenyon College.

Denison made a major push offensively in the final 15 minutes of the first half.  Senior Taylor Bacon got things going with a goal from just inside the 23-meter line off a feed from Katie McMahon.  That was her third goal of the season.

The contest would shift dramatically in favor of the home team over the final three minutes of the opening half when McMahon got free and scored a break-away goal in the 33rd minute.

With less than 20 seconds left in the period, Denison drew its first penalty corner attempt of the match and successfully converted the attempt for the 3-0 lead.  After Bacon's pass from the corner went to McMahon, she fired a shot at Kenyon goalie Sydney Carney-Knisely who responded with a kick save.  The ball bounced back into the field of play and that's when Alex B. Berman was Johnny-on-the-spot with her team-high eighth goal of the season.

In the second half Kenyon and Denison each would take six shot attempts and in the 62nd minute the Ladies broke through with its first goal of the day when Julie Freedman snuck a shot into the DU cage.

Denison held a 14-10 advantage in shots and the two teams tied with five penalty corner attempts, apiece.  Big Red goalie Laura Campbell finished with seven saves while Carney-Knisely ended the day with five. Denison's Allie Bacon also turned in a defensive save when she deflected a shot attempt with time expired in the second half off a Kenyon penalty corner.

Denison's record moves to 7-1 overall, and 5-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Kenyon's record dips to 5-4 overall, and 3-2 in league play. DU will return to action on Friday (Oct. 4) when they travel to Oberlin for a 4 p.m. start.
