Box Score Senior forward Katie McMahon posted her third career hat-trick as the Denison Big Red rode the momentum of four, second half goals to defeat The College of Wooster, 5-1 in Granville, Ohio.
With Denison clinging to a 1-0 halftime lead after an opening minute goal by senior Alex B. Berman off an assist from Molly Chapman, DU came out of the gates strong in the second half.
That's when McMahon broke through with her second goal of the season by slipping a ball past Wooster goalie Meredith Farley, into the right corner of the cage.
Seventeen minutes later, following a Denison penalty corner attempt, Kate Hackett controlled the ball and sent a crossing pass to McMahon who settled the ball and scored.  Less than one minute later, with the ball once again in Denison's half, McMahon dribbled her way around two defenders and popped a shot into the cage, over the waiting pads of Farley, giving DU a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The Fighting Scots would get on the scoreboard in the 58th minute when Nikki Sever and Taylor Thorp converted a two-on-one breakaway attempt.
Six minutes later, after a McMahon shot was saved by Farley, the ball rebounded back into the field of play and senior midfielder Karla Dixon was there to fire in her first goal of the season.
Denison outshot Wooster 24-4 while holding an 8-3 advantage in penalty corner attempts.  DU goalie Laura Campbell posted two saves while Farley finished with six.  McMahon led all players with eight shot attempts.
The win improves Denison's record to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  The loss drops Wooster to 3-5 and 2-3 in the NCAC.  The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 28) when they host Kenyon College at 11 a.m.
