Big Red blanks Quakers behind Berlet's hat-trick

Box Score

Denison sophomore transfer Logan Berlet recorded her first-collegiate hat-trick as the Big Red shut out Earlham College, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.

DU put the pedal to the metal from the get-go as they began unloading shots at the Quaker goal.  The Big Red rattled off four shots in the opening 10 minute and had logged 12 by the midway point of the first half.

Denison peppered Earlham goalie A.J. Johnson with seven shots on net before finally breaking through in the 32nd minute.  After a shot by freshman Meg Sutter was initially stopped by Johnson, the Quaker keeper lost control of the save which set up Berlet for her first tally of the night.  The sophomore buried the loose ball into the lower left 90 from point blank range for her third goal of the season.

With less than a minute left in the opening period, Berlet struck for two more to finish off her natural hat-trick.  Senior Jocelyn Festle started DU's second scoring play with a pass to sophomore Andrea Witte.  Witte quickly one-touched a pass back to Festle who sent a ball from the right side towards the far post.  Berlet was able to sneak behind the Earlham defense and knock the ball into the lower left 90 with 42.8 seconds left in the first half.

As time continued to wind down, the Big Red set up another scoring play as they looked to expand their lead.  With the clock falling under 10 seconds, senior defender Libbie Randolph lifted a cross from the right corner towards the middle of the box.  Randolph's high-arcing ball found the head of Berlet who popped it into the upper left corner for her third goal of the night.  The sophomore's fifth goal of the season game with just 4.2 seconds left in the first period.

Denison unloaded 22 shots in the first half, while Earlham had just seven attempts.  The DU attack added six more shots in the second half compared to just one by the Quakers.  In all, the Big Red put 12 of their 28 shots on net, while just three of eight Earlham attempts were on goal.  Both teams attempted five corners, while the Quakers committed one more infraction than DU (5-4).

Berlet's three goals came off six shots, while Witte also finished with six shots attempts to pace the Denison offense.  Senior goalie Andrea Karl made three stops en route to her second shutout of the season.  Johnson made nine saves in a losing effort for Earlham.

DU improves to 4-4 on the year, while the Quakers fall to 1-4-1.  Denison opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Allegheny College for a 12 p.m. match with the Gators.
