Mistakes prove costly in loss to No. 19 Wabash

Box Score

No. 19 Wabash took advantage of some early Denison miscues and a 21-point second quarter would propel the Little Giants to a 50-13 victory over the Big Red from Hollett Little Giant Stadium in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Aside from four costly lost fumbles that resulted in three Wabash touchdowns, Denison struggled to sustain a drive longer than 3:30 until the team's final possession in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Wabash was piecing together long drives that wore down the over-used Denison defense as the game progressed.

Denison trailed 9-0 after one quarter and if not for a muffed punt and recovery in the end zone by Wabash, DU would have entered the second quarter trailing by just a field goal.

Spotting points to talented teams like Wabash is never a great idea, and in the second quarter Little Giant quarterback Michael Putko would go 8-for-8 for 101 yards while leading his team on three touchdown scoring drives which ate up over nine minutes of clock.

In the third quarter, DU would get on the scoreboard when Brandon Sklenar found DuShawn Brown on a 33-yard scoring strike.  The Big Red's final touchdown would come from sophomore Jordan Patterson, who reached paydirt on a 35-yard scamper with 8:45 to play in the fourth quarter.  Patterson's rushing touchdown was the first of his career.

Sklenar finished the game 11-for-21 for 114 yards and one touchdown pass.  Patterson led the team in rushing with five carries for 55 yards.  Sklenar followed with five carries for 31 yards while tailbacks Colin Morris and John Wilson combined 46 yards on 11 carries.

Brown was DU's leading receiver with four receptions for 72 yards and a score.

Putko ended the day 15-for-23 for 173 yards passing.  Tyler Holmes rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries while Putko added 61 rushing yards off 12 carries to go along with two TD's.  Houston Hodges paced Wabash's receivers with seven catches for 78 yards.

The Denison defense was on the field for 84 plays.  Starting defensive backs Lucas Romick and Andrew Baird led Denison with 16 and 14 tackles, respectively.  Both were career highs for the young DU defenders.  Baird also added one sack and three tackles for a loss while Romick added one TFL and two pass break-up's.   Senior linebacker Joel Elliott added nine stops for Denison while Woods led Wabash with nine tackles.

Denison drops to 2-1 with the loss while Wabash improves to 2-0.  The Big Red will look to rebound next Saturday (Sept. 28) when they travel to Selby Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Ohio Wesleyan.
