Terriers knock off Big Red

Box Score

Serafina Nuzzo scored a career-high 25 points but that wouldn't be enough to help the Big Red as Hiram College came away with a 60-55 victory on Saturday at Price Gymnasium.

Denison trailed 33-24 at the break after shooting 26 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes of play.  In the second half, Nuzzo would score 18 points and DU would outscore the Terriers 31-27 but that wouldn't be enough to overcome the 11-point deficit.

While DU did outscore Hiram in the second half their shooting percentage did not rise.  The Big Red controlled the glass, outrebounding the Terriers 26-17 in the second half, but Denison connected on 8-of-37 from the field and shot 24 percent for the game.

Meanwhile, Hiram attempted 19 fewer shots than DU but they connected at a 42 percent clip and were 6-of-19 from beyond the arc.

Hiram got 23 points and 11 rebounds from Brenna Host and 12 points and five boards from Calysia Symers.

The bulk of Denison's scoring came from Nuzzo who poured in 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds.  Candise Love, Gretchen Staubach and Kinsey Bryant-Lees each added six points.  DU was led on the glass by senior guard Nicole Coggins who snared 12.

Early in the second half, Nuzzo passed Kristen Sheffield '07 for fourth place on the all-time scoring list.  She also moved into second-place in career assists, passing 1996 graduate Bridget Colleran.  In 110 career games, Nuzzo has scored 1,361 points and has dished out 434 assists.

With the loss DU drops to 13-12 and 8-8 in the conference. They have secured the No. 4 seed in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and will host No. 5 Wittenberg on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at a time to be determined.
