Box Score Sarah McQuade and Laniece McRae combined for 35 points to help Ohio Wesleyan knock off North Coast Athletic Conference rival Denison, 68-57, on Saturday afternoon in Granville.
Neither team led by more than three points over the first 14 minutes of the opening period. With the game tied at 20-20, the Bishops orchestrated a 15-2 run over the final 5:26 to take a double-digit lead into the locker room. During that stretch, the Big Red committed seven turnovers and went 1-for-6 from the field. The run continued into the second when McQuade opened the period with a 3-pointer to give the visiting team a 38-22 lead.
Denison cut the deficit to 11 with 15 minutes left in regulation when sophomore Kellie Arter buried a 3-pointer to make it a 40-29 contest. However, a five-minute scoring drought for DU allowed Ohio Wesleyan to build a 17-point lead. The Big Red chipped away multiple times, but timely scoring allowed the Bishops to maintain a double-digit lead for the entire second half.
Ohio Wesleyan shot 42 percent (22-for-53) from the field, including a 50-percent clip (14-for-28) in the first period. They also went 6-for-13 (46 percent) from 3-point range and connected on 18-of-25 free throws (72 percent). Denison shot a season-low 38 percent from the field (20-for-53) and knocked down just 5-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc (29 percent). The Battling Bishops held a 38-30 edge on the glass, and outscored DU 24-16 in the paint. OWU also turned 11 offensive rebounds into 21 points.
Arter led Denison with 18 points, going 8 of 16. She also grabbed three rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. Mary Margaret Habel added 13 points and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. Freshman Jordan Holmes led DU with six rebounds. She also had six points, two steals and two blocks, while junior guard Candise Love finished with eight points and four assists.
McQuade led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five assists and two steals, while McRae had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Denison falls to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC, while Ohio Wesleyan improves to 3-4 and 1-1 in league play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 14) when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 2 p.m. contest against Wittenberg.
