Box Score Gettysburg's Lauren Schapiro scored in the 79th minute of play as the Bullets edged the Denison Big Red, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pa.
Denison struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening period, getting outshot 10-3. Only one of DU's attempts required a save from Bullet keeper Eliza Gray, while Andrea Karl and the Denison defense were forced to make four saves in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Shortly after a Keara Kilbane corner kick in the 57th minute, the match was halted due to thunderstorms. Once play resumed the Gettysburg attack kicked it up a notch, rattling off seven-consecutive shots. Karl kept the first four shots on goal out of the net, but it was the fifth one that finally put Gettysburg ahead. Schapiro scored the game-winning goal off a rebound at 78:41.
After falling behind, the Big Red offense began to press the action over the final seven minutes of play. Kilbane and Lauren Jay each fired a shot towards the opposing goal. DU's final attempt was a Jocelyn Festle shot that was corralled by Gray with less than three to play.
DU was outshot 18-6 on the day, while the Bullets held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. First-year Andrea Witte attempted two shots, while Sara Livingston and Festle each sent an attempt on net. Karl finished the day with seven saves, while Gray made two stops.
The Big Red falls to 0-4 on the year, while Gettysburg improves to 2-1. Denison returns to the pitch on Wednesday (Sept. 12) against Otterbein University. Kickoff at Barclay-Thomsen Field is slated for 7 p.m.
