Big Red breakout with win over Witt

Box Score

Denison managed to stop the bleeding of a three-game losing streak after a 6-1 victory over visiting Wittenberg University on Wednesday from Piper Stadium.

The Big Red and Tigers dodged rain drops and sat through a 36 minute lightning delay in the first half but by that time DU already held a 3-0 advantage.  Denison's first score of the game came in the fourth minute when Taylor Bacon scored via an assist by Katie McMahon.

In the 21st minute, McMahon assisted on the first career goal for freshman Elsie Humes.  One minute later Alex B. Berman scored off a pass from Rachel Mabie after a penalty corner attempt.

After the lightning delay stopped the contest with three minutes left in the first half, the two teams would take a shortened halftime.

Four minutes into the second half DU went up 4-0 when Karla Dixon played a pass from the top of the shooting circle to a waiting Catie Merrick.  Merrick passed to Mabie who punched in her first career goal.

In the 45th minute, Merrick got on the board with a goal off a pass from fellow senior defender Katherine Ireland.  Merrick would strike again in the 47th minute with an unassisted blast from 8-yards out that hit nothing but the back of the cage.

With seven minutes remaining, Wittenberg got on the scoreboard when Kim Loofbourrow scored via a penalty corner.

DU outshot the Tigers 14-8.  Brittany Benson had two saves while Jessica Jensen finished with five saves for Wittenberg.  Denison (6-3, 4-2 NCAC) will continue North Coast Athletic Conference play this Saturday when they travel to Earlham for a 10:30 a.m. game with the Quakers.
