Box Score Chelsea Cutler's goal just under six minutes into the first overtime propelled DePauw to a 1-0 victory over Denison from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
The two teams were locked in a battle for the entire 76 minutes of play and both squads had opportunities go by the wayside thanks to some spectacular defensive play. In the first half, DePauw outshot Denison 9-2, while attempting nine penalty corners in the period.
The Big Red's best opportunity to score came in the 17th minute when junior Katie McMahon took a shot with DePauw goalie Maggie Steele coming out to challenge the ball. With the keeper out of position, McMahon's shot sailed just wide of the cage.
In the overtime period Denison sent McMahon, Karla Dixon, Taylor Bacon, Catie Merrick, Katherine Ireland, Alex W. Berman, and Brittany Benson on to the field and after a few failed break-away attempts, DePauw regained possession, forcing back-to-back penalty corners. On the second corner that was attempted by Cutler, DU tried to clear the ball out of the shooting circle, but Cutler snuck into the play from the side, gained possession and sent her shot into the upper right corner of the cage.
DePauw outshot Denison 13-3 while taking 12 penalty corners to Denison's four. Benson posted seven saves while Dixon added one defensive save for the Big Red. Steele finished with one save in goal for the Tigers.
The win improves DePauw's record to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison drops to 5-3 and 3-2 in conference play. The Big Red will try and get back on track this Wednesday (Sept. 26) when they host Wittenberg at 4:30 p.m.
