Panthers hold on to edge Denison

Box Score

A pair of goals 14 seconds apart helped the Hanover Panthers edge Denison 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The two teams battled for the first 20+ minutes of action with the Big Red holding a 4-3 edge in shots over Hanover, an NCAA Tournament team from a season ago.

On the Panthers' fourth attempt, third on goal, Hannah Barker slipped a shot past DU goalie Andrea Karl and into the back of the net at 29:27.  Barker's score came off a through ball from Christa Hurak.  The Panthers wasted no time doubling their lead as Anne-Spicer Adams converted a breakaway attempt into a goal just 14 seconds later.

With roughly 15 minutes left in the first half, the Big Red continued to push the offense.  In the 37th minute, rookie Joy Dennis settled the ball just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box and unleashed a shot into the upper right 90.  Dennis' first career goal shrunk the deficit to 2-1.  With 14 seconds left in the half, senior Kate Ludwig released a shot on goal, but Panther keeper Bethann Hancock was there to corral the attempt.

In the second half, Hanover nearly scored a third goal when Rachel Alvis looped a shot over the charging Karl.  However, the attempt struck the crossbar and fell short of the goal line.  Senior captain Alicia Blake knocked the ball out of danger to keep it a one-goal match in the 62nd minute.

Over the final 10+ minutes of action, Denison applied heavy offensive pressure in search of the game-tying goal.  First-years Keara Kilbane and Andrea Waclawek each put a shot on net.  With 11 seconds remaining in regulation, Kilbane threw one final attempt towards the goal that was blocked down by the Panther defense.

Both teams attempted 10 shots, with Hanover having a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.  Karl and Hancock each made three saves in 90 minutes of action.

Denison falls to 0-2 on the year, while the Panthers improve to 2-0.  The Big Red closes out their three-game homestand on Tuesday (Sept. 5) against Case Western Reserve.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
