Box Score Senior forward Catie Merrick scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Katie McMahon 4:44 into the first overtime, helping Denison to a 4-3 win over Randolph-Macon in Newport News, Va.
Denison held a 3-1 advantage at the intermission thanks to a hat trick by McMahon in the first half. The junior scored off unassisted goals in the 15th minute and again in the 19th minute. Randolph-Macon's Lauren Seal would add a goal at the 20:56 mark but McMahon would answer again in the 26th minute with her fifth goal of the season.
The score would remain 3-1, in favor of the Big Red, until RMC's Carrie Jacobs and Rachel Gardner's goals in the 52nd and 63rd minutes forced overtime.
In the overtime, Denison would take two penalty corners and send two shots on-cage before Merrick's game winner snuck by Randolph-Macon goalie Nicole Woodworth.
Denison outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-14. Fifteen of Denison's shot attempts were on-cage. Woodworth ended with seven saves in 58 minutes while Shannon McMurray added four saves in 17 minutes.
DU goalkeeper Brittany Benson played all 74:44 and posted six saves while facing 10 shots on-goal. McMahon led Denison with seven shots while Merrick took three. Rachel Mabie added the game's only defensive save.
Denison improves to 5-0 while RMC drops to 0-6. The Big Red will face a tough test on Sunday when they take on No. 14 Christopher Newport at 10 a.m.
