Box Score The Wabash defense forced six turnovers and Chase Belton passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns as the eighth-ranked Little Giants defeated Denison 35-2 from Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
Denison trailed 14-2 at the intermission and was driving in Wabash territory on their first drive of the second half. On third down, the Little Giants sacked quarterback Max Paulus, forcing a punt that went out of bounds at the Wabash 7-yard line. The play of the game for Wabash would come six plays later when Belton hit Jon Laird for a 70-yard touchdown pass on third down, putting the visitors up 21-2 with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Wabash's Bryce Biberstein forced a fumble on Denison returner John Wilson that was recovered by the Little Giants on the Big Red 19-yard line. The Wabash offense went to work and three plays later Belton connected with Andrew Gibson for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
Later in the fourth quarter, Wabash's Vann Hunt would add a 3-yard touchdown run to cap off the scoring at 35-2.
Denison's lone points came via a safety in the second quarter when Belton was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone after pressure by Nat Kell and Lane Hartfield.
The Big Red offense finished with 267 yards while Wabash ended with 320 yards. Senior quarterback, Paulus, was under pressure all afternoon. In all, Wabash posted seven sacks, and seven hurries, while forcing Paulus into a career-high four interceptions, many of which were aided by the Little Giants pass rush. Despite the four interceptions, Paulus was 26-of-46 for 221 yards. Sam Fioroni was the leading receiver with eight catches for 53 yards. Wilson caught five passes for 43 yards and Braden Layer ended with four grabs for 37 yards.
On the ground, Fioroni carried the ball 18 times for 80 yards. The seven sacks by Wabash resulted in a loss of 48 yards for the Big Red.
For Wabash, Belton was 17-for-30 for 218 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 17 yards and one score. The leading receiver for Wabash was Laird, who caught three passes for 82 yards. CP Porter paced the Little Giants on the ground with seven carries for 49 yards and one touchdown.
Joel Elliott led the DU defense with 10 tackles and 1 ½ tackles for a loss. Hartfield finished with five tackles and 1 ½ sacks. Wabash's Cody Buresh paced the visitors with 11 tackles, 3 ½ sacks, and five tackles for a loss. Jonathan Koop and Austin Hodges each accounted for a pair of interceptions.
Wabash improves to 2-0 with the victory while the Big Red falls to 0-2. Denison will look to get back on track next Saturday when they travel to Hiram for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Terriers.
