Late run secures Denison win

Box Score

A 15-6 run over the final six-plus minutes sent the Denison Big Red to a 68-59 win over North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon on Friday night in Gambier, Ohio.

The win extended Denison's current winning streak over the Ladies to 10-straight games.  In addition, the Big Red moved into a tie for third place in the NCAC standings with Kenyon.

With 6:49 left in regulation, the Ladies' Morgan Korinek buried a pair of free throws to tie the game for the 12th and final time.  Following the Korinek free throws, the Big Red defense shut down Kenyon, allowing just three shots and forcing two turnovers over the Ladies' next five possessions.

On the flip side, the DU offense scored on four of its next six possessions to build an eight-point lead.  Sophomore Jane Windler provided four points, while junior Nicole Coggins and first-year Alyx Ingram each added two tallies.

With 3:26 to go, Korinek converted two more attempts at the charity stripe to trim the deficit to 61-55.  The Big Red ended a two minute 25 second scoring drought when junior Serafina Nuzzo split a pair at the foul line with 1:14 on the clock.  Over the final 53 seconds, Denison went 6-for-8 from the free throw line, including a 4-for-4 performance from Nuzzo, to secure the win.

Both Denison (23-for-47) and Kenyon (22-for-55) shot 40 percent from the field and made five three-pointers on the night.  The Ladies held a slight 32-28 edge in the paint, but the Big Red turned 15 Kenyon turnovers into 14 points.  DU also scored twice as many second-chance points (16-8), and held a dominating 45-29 advantage on the boards.

Both Windler and Nuzzo scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Big Red.  Windler also logged her second double-double of the season after grabbing a game-best 12 rebounds.  Rookie Lydia Harlan added 12 points and six boards, while Ingram chipped in 11 tallies off the bench.

Maureen Hirt and Kayla Ernst each recorded 15 points and five rebounds to pace Kenyon, while Korinek finished with 12 points, seven boards and two blocks.

With the win, DU improves to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC, while the Ladies fall to 14-7 and 7-5 in conference play.  Denison returns to action on Wednesday when they host Wittenberg at 7:30 p.m.  Tune into the Denison Sports Network's broadcast on Wednesday as the Big Red look to avenge a two-point loss from earlier this season.
