Big Red rolls to 19-point win over Tigers

Box Score

Sam Fioroni rushed for 147 yards and scored three touchdowns as Denison rolled to a 39-20 victory over DePauw on Saturday from Blackstock Stadium in Greencastle, Ind.

Fioroni has been Denison's workhorse all season and his grinding style has helped the Denison offense lead the North Coast Athletic Conference in time of possession.  Today the senior toted the ball 28 times for an average of 5.2 yards per carry.  He scored three straight touchdowns between the second and third quarters that gave Denison a two-touchdown lead.

Fioroni entered the game needing only 45 yards to go over 1,000-yards rushing for the season.  He reached that plateau early and kept going.  He became just the fourth offensive back in Denison history to post two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his career.

While the offense once again dominated possession, 39 minutes to 21 minutes, the defense held the Tigers to -13 yards rushing while forcing five sacks.  Teddy Kuntz finished with two sacks while Nat Kell ended with 1 ½ sacks and two tackles for a loss.  Lane Hartfield also posted one sack on the night.  Alec Fultz was the team leader in tackles with seven.  In the second quarter, senior safety Alex Sycher recorded Denison's first interception of the season off a Drew Seaman pass.  The interception led to the first of two touchdown passes from Max Paulus to Steven Lilley.

Paulus threw for 245 yards while going 17-for-29.  He passed for three touchdowns, with two going to Lilley and one to Fioroni.  He also completed four passes to Braden Layer that the fifth-year senior turned into 95 yards.

Paulus is another DU offensive star that is inching closer to a milestone.  He needs just 46 yards passing next week to become Denison's career leader in passing yards.  In three seasons as the starting quarterback, Paulus has thrown for 6,395 yards.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Big Red.  It also improves their record to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC.  DePauw drops to 2-7 and 1-5 in conference play.  The 2012 season will come to a close next Saturday (Nov. 10) in Gambier with a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Lords.
