DU, Scots clash in NCAC Semis

The Denison women's soccer team secured its 12th North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament berth following a 2-0 victory over Oberlin on Senior Day in Granville last Saturday.

The win, coupled with losses by Allegheny and Kenyon, earned the Big Red the third seed in the 2012 NCAC Tournament.  As the No. 3 seed, DU will travel to second-seeded Wooster on Thursday afternoon for a 2 p.m. match.

After opening the conference slate with a 2-2 mark, Denison posted a 2-1-1 record over the final two weeks to secure a spot in the postseason tournament.  Over those final four games, the Big Red outscored their opponents 7-1, including three shutouts.

Pacing the offensive attack are junior Jocelyn Festle and first-year Andrea Witte.  Festle leads the team with six goals, including a natural hat trick at Hiram on Oct. 20, and 14 points.  In her rookie season, Witte has logged three goals and a team-best three assists.  In goal, Academic All-American keeper Andrea Karl has started all 17 games and posted four shutouts with a 1.12 goals-against average.

Thursday will mark the 41st meeting between the two schools and just the third in the NCAC Tournament.  Denison leads the all-time series 26-10-4 despite losing this season's meeting in Wooster.  Crystal Chavez netted a pair of goals in in a two minutes and 57 second span to garner the win for the Fighting Scots.  In the first postseason meeting, the two squads battled to a 1-1 draw at Barclay-Thomsen Field.  DU edged Wooster via penalty kicks (4-3) to win the 2003 NCAC Tournament.  Five years later in Granville, the Scots handed the Big Red a 1-0 setback in the semifinal round of the tournament.

In the other NCAC semifinal match, top-seeded Wittenberg will host fourth-seeded DePauw at 7 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
