DU shuts out rival Wittenberg

Denison got back in the win column with a 3-0 victory over Wittenberg in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday in Springfield.

The Big Red capped off a dominating first half with a goal in the 34th minute.  The one goal of the period came off the stick of junior All-American Katie McMahon, who converted her first penalty stroke attempt of the season.  DU outshot the Tigers 10-2 in the opening 35 minutes.

In the second period, the Wittenberg offense put pressure on Denison, unloading the first six shots of the half.  However, the stout DU defense stood strong to keep it a one-goal game.

The Big Red extended its lead in the 50th minute when McMahon her second penalty stroke of the game.  The goal was McMahon's 14th of the year.  Roughly four minutes later, Elsie Humes found the back of the cage once again, this time off an assist from Kate Hackett.

Denison outshot the Tigers 20-10, while both teams attempted five penalty corners.  Big Red keeper Brittany Benson made three stops in goal, while Alie Marousek had two saves for Wittenberg.

With the win, DU improves to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in NCAC play, while the Tigers fall to 4-12 and 3-9 in league action.  Denison closes out the regular season on Saturday when they host Earlham at 11 a.m.
