Denison blanks Sewanee

Box Score

Denison field hockey won its fourth-straight match to improve to 11-4 following a 3-0 victory over Sewanee from Piper Stadium.

DU took the lead early in the first half when Catie Merrick scored after a shot attempt by Taylor Bacon was saved by Sewanee goalie Anna Morrow.  After the save, Merrick was there to put away the follow-up attempt.  The goal was the 16th of the season for Merrick.

The score would remain 1-0, in favor of the Big Red until the second half.  That's when senior Hilary Zdanowski sent a crossing pass to the stick of Taylor Bacon who converted the re-direct for her fifth goal of 2012.

Denison's final goal would come in the 65th minute when Katie Couyoumjian slipped a pass through traffic to a waiting Courtney Testani who caught the Tigers with an open cage.  The goal was the second of the season for Testani and the first assist for Couyoumjian.

Testani and Katie McMahon led DU in shots with five apiece.  Bacon and Merrick followed with three shots each.  Senior goalie Brittany Benson turned in four saves while facing eight shots from Sewanee.  Morrow finished with nine saves for the Tigers while facing 20 shots.  Denison held an 8-7 edge in penalty corner attempts.

DU will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Oct. 17) against Kenyon College at 4:30 p.m. in Granville.
