Denison gridders fall to Oberlin

Box Score

Josh Mandel passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns and Robin Witjes caught 12 passes for 222 yards as Oberlin topped Denison, 30-6 from Savage Field.

Leading 14-0 late in the second quarter, it appeared as if the Big Red were going to get on the scoreboard and possible cut the Yeomen's lead in half.  In a drive that started on their own 9-yard line, DU put together a 14-play drive that eventually stalled at the Oberlin 6-yard line with 21 seconds left in the half.

The Big Red called for the field goal unit and that's when Matt Purrachio's 23-yard attempt was blocked by Oberlin's Shawn Chrapczynski and returned 85-yards for what would be a game breaking touchdown by Matt Richard.  The 10-point swing sent the home team into the locker room with all of the momentum and despite a third quarter touchdown by DU's Sam Fioroni, the Big Red offense couldn't find a groove in the second half.

Denison quarterback Max Paulus threw for 226 yards after completing 22-of-37 passes, but was sacked eight times on the afternoon for a total loss of 61 yards.

Fioroni carried the ball 18 times for a total of 49 yards.  He also caught a team-high seven passes for 73 yards.

Witjes did most of the damage for Oberlin on the offensive end.  The senior wide receiver hauled in 12 passes for 222 yards while reaching pay dirt, twice.  His touchdowns came on scoring strikes of 89-yards in the first quarter and 5-yards in the third.

Junior defensive lineman Jake Danko recorded nine tackles and four sacks for the Yeomen while Clay Eaton followed with three sacks.

For Denison, Alex Sycher and Lane Hartfield led the way with eight tackles apiece.  Hartfield also posted 3 ½ tackles for a loss .

Denison falls to 2-4 with the loss and dips to 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  The victory moves Oberlin's record to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC.  Denison will look to rebound next Saturday (Oct. 20) when they host Washington (Mo.) at 1 p.m.
