Box Score The Denison women's basketball team went 4-for-5 from the field and knocked down all eight free throws in overtime en route to a 64-60 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon on Friday evening in Granville.
The win extended the Big Red's current winning streak to five games, and ended the Ladies' run at eight. The four-point victory also marked DU's ninth-consecutive win over Kenyon.
Friday night's contest was mere inches away from ending in regulation. However, a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer by Morgan Korinek bounced off the front of the iron and rimmed out. After controlling the tip in OT, junior point guard Serafina Nuzzo drew first blood with a deep triple off an assist from senior Annie-Rae Dura. Midway through the extra session the Ladies' Maureen Hirt answered with a three of her own to knot the game at 54-54.
Following a pair of Alyx Ingram free throws, the smothering Big Red defense forced a Maggie Boelter turnover. That take away turned out to be a key possession as junior Nicole Coggins buried a deep jumper to put Denison on top 58-54 with 1:11 to play. Ahead 60-56, Ingram and Nuzzo went a combined 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to ice the victory.
Denison entered the half with a slim 24-23 lead. Kenyon regained the lead in the early stages of the second period before building a nine-point advantage. However, the Big Red chipped away at the deficit and, with 2:39 to play, Dura scored to tie the contest at 45-45. With just under a minute to go, sophomore Jane Windler's two free throws tied the contest for the fourth time and sent the game into overtime.
The Big Red made up for their shooting woes with a solid performance at the charity stripe. DU was 20-for-60 from the field, but shot an 85 percent clip (17-for-20) from the foul line, including 14-straight in the second half and overtime. The Ladies hit 40 percent from the floor and were 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Kenyon held a slight 38-37 edge on the glass, but Denison turned 24 KC turnovers into 24 points.
Nuzzo paced the DU offense with a season-high tying 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in 41 minutes of action. The junior point guard finished an impressive 5-for-10 from behind the arc. Ingram and Windler also added 12 points each, while Coggins chipped in 10 tallies.
Hirt led the Kenyon attack with 22 points, while Korinek added 14 points and seven rebounds. Autumn Anderson came off the bench and grabbed a game-high eight boards.
Denison improves to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC, while the Ladies fall to 10-3 and suffered their first conference loss of the season (3-1). DU returns to the court when they travel to the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7). Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
