Box Score Lauren Gerbick's goal in the 32nd minute held strong as Marian edged the Big Red 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Granville.
Denison got the first quality scoring chance off a corner kick by Sara Livingston in the seventh minute. Off the corner, first-year Lydia Harlan sent a header towards the net that was corralled by Marian keeper Jessica Fisher.
The Knights broke up the scoreless tie when Katy Toth found a streaking Gerbick down the right sideline. One-on-one with goalie Andrea Karl, Gerbick lifted her shot over the diving keeper to give Marian a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The Denison offense sent a barrage of shots towards Fisher in the second half as they tried to erase the one-goal deficit. In the 58th minute, first-year Maddy Regan put a shot on goal off a crossing pass from classmate Grace Cronin. Two minutes later, junior defender Alicia Blake uncorked a shot from 25 yards out that looked like it was going to find the upper left corner. However, Blake's attempt died just short of the goal line and fell into the arms of Fisher.
In the 70th minute, Harlan had another solid scoring opportunity off a corner kick. Blake sent in a beautiful ball that found the rookie in the middle of the box. Harlan's header hit the crossbar and dropped straight down in front of the goal line. The Knight defense got the loose ball out of danger before the Big Red could knock it in.
Over the final 15 minutes, the DU offense unloaded seven shots, including a Cronin blast that was punched over the crossbar with 2:30 remaining.
Denson outshot Marian 20-6, including a 13-2 edge in the second period. The Big Red attempted six corners compared to three by the Knights. Karl finished with two saves, while Fisher stopped all six shots on goal.
Cronin and Regan came off the bench to pace the Denison attack with six and five shots, respectively. Harlan attempted four shots, while Claire Hamilton recorded three.
DU falls to 1-1, while the Knights improve to 3-0. The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Case Western Reserve. Match time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
