Stout defense secures road win

Box Score

No. 10 Denison held Saint Vincent to one second half goal, and the DU offense responded with six goals over the final 30 minutes to ink a 9-3 victory over the Bearcats from Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe, Pa.

Saint Vincent checked into the game with an 8-2 record and thoughts of the NCAA playoffs in the front of their minds.  Denison, winners of five straight, also knew how vital this road victory would be to their postseason aspirations.  The first half resembled that of a playoff game as the Big Red took a 3-2 lead into halftime.  The Bearcats could only muster eight shots over the first two quarters and they won four of seven face-off's.  It was the turnover bug that Saint Vincent just couldn't seem to shake, and in the second half their miscues caught up to them.

In the early stages of the third quarter, following a save by DU goalie Nick Petracca, the Big Red took a 4-2 lead behind an unassisted goal by Davis Lukens.

Five minutes later, Saint Vincent would score their third goal on a second chance attempt by Peter Hronis.  Denison's Porter McKay was flagged for a slashing penalty on Hronis' shot attempt and if it wasn't for another Petracca save, the Bearcats would have tied the match while in their man-up offense.

Instead, Saint Vincents' extra-man opportunity failed and Denison's Emmett Jones scored his first goal of the day off a feed from first-year Chapin Speidel, putting the Big Red up 5-3.

Before the third quarter would end, DU's Cory Couture scored for the second time, this time off a pass from Tanner Smith and the junior would strike again to open the fourth quarter after a feed from Kyle Brown.  Now leading  7-3 with 12:54 to play, DU would control possession over the next eight minutes before Colin Molloy found Jones with 5:57 left.  After dropping the ensuing face-off, Denison forced Saint Vincent into their 23rd turnover of the day and quickly turned that into their sixth goal of the half when Jones finished off a pass from Couture.

Denison outshot the Bearcats 39-22 while gathering 29 ground balls compared to just 19 for the home team.  Saint Vincent ended with 25 turnovers but Bearcat goalie Adam Gunter also posted 16 saves marking the fourth-straight game in which the opposing goalie has notched double-figures in saves against DU.

Petracca ended with seven saves while Couture tallied three goals and one assist.  Jones also matched Couture for the team-lead in goals with three, while Molloy ended the day with one goal and one assist.  First-year Tommy Harrison posted a career-high seven ground balls while sophomore Corey Daff was 4-for-9 in face-off's.

Seven penalties were committed in the game and DU was 1-for-3 in extra-man situations. Denison's lone man-up goal was scored by Zach Walsh in the first quarter.

Denison moves to 8-1 while running their winning streak to six games.  Denison will return to action next Saturday (April 16) when the 9-0 and No. 19 ranked Wittenberg Tigers come to Deeds Field-Piper Stadium for a 1 p.m. face-off.  Live Video of that contest will be provided free of charge by the Denison Sports Network.
