The Denison men's golf team closed out the 36-hole Nye Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Wooster with a second-day total of 314 to finish in third place overall. That score matched their opening round score and allowed them to edge fourth-place, Allegheny by three strokes.
The Big Red was led by senior Kyle Bates who followed up his first round 77 with a two-over, 74 on Sunday. Bates tied with three other golfers for fourth place in the individual standings.
He was followed on Sunday by Aaron Klimchuk who shot a 77 on Sunday to finish tied for 12th overall. Sam Kaiser and Jeff Maier rounded out the scoring with rounds of 81 and 82, respectively.
Wittenberg University was the team champion with a total of 602 strokes. Ohio Wesleyan took second with 615.
This tournament marked the first half of the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series. The final 36-holes will be played next weekend (April 30-May 1) at Aurora Country Club in Aurora, Ohio. The tournament is being hosted by Hiram College.
