Box Score Denison improved to 5-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play following a 10-8 victory over Kenyon College on Tuesday night from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The Big Red got three goals from Jenny Strathern and, nine draws from Carly Tschantz en route to the win.
The victory improves Denison's record to 8-4 overall and solidifies their first-place standing in the NCAC. This is the first 5-0 start since 2005 when the Big Red rolled through the regular season with a 6-0 record. Tonight's win also marked the first victory over Kenyon since 2007.
It was a physical contest which featured 42 fouls and six yellow cards but from the opening whistle Denison dominated the draw thanks to the brilliant play of Tschantz. For the game Denison held a 16-1 advantage in draw controls with nine of those going directly to Tschantz.
At the half both teams were tied 6-6 and the Big Red got on the board early in the second half thanks to a flashy Lulu Carter spin move that resulted in the senior's first goal of the game. The game would remain in 7-6 in favor of the Big Red until the 14:31 mark of the half. After a foul on Kenyon's Alex Blair, Carter converted the Big Red's second 8-meter attempt of the half putting the Big Red up 8-6.
Less than two minutes after Carter's 8-meter goal, Denison's Molly Sbrega converted her first goal of the night off a feed from Strathern.
Kenyon would bounce back at the 10:31 mark with a goal by Alex Bair but at the 6:27 mark Olivia Shiland pushed the DU lead back to three at 10-7.
DU would win the ensuing draw but a turnover by Phoebe Myhrum would lead to a goal by Kenyon's Leah Sack with just over four minutes to play. After another Big Red draw, Kenyon would get the ball back after a Denison turnover. A shot by Charlotte Green went wide and Myhrum would come through with an interception at the 2:41 mark allowing Denison to clear the ball and successfully run out the clock over the next two and a half minutes to secure the victory.
Strathern paced Denison with three goals and one assist while Carter finished with two goals, five caused turnovers and eight ground balls. Her five caused turnovers and eight ground balls also tied a single-game school record.
Shiland added two goals and two caused turnovers and Sbrega scored onece to go along with two assists.
Denison goalie Grace Bodenmann finished with nine saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal. Kenyon goalie Casey McKone turned in a 13 save performance for the Ladies. Sack paced Kenyon with three goals while Emily Nichols added two.
DU will return to action next Tuesday (April 19) when they host Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m. They will cap off their NCAC schedule on Saturday (April 23). A victory against the Fighting Scots would clinch the conference championship and secure the Big Red home field advantage in the conference tournament.
