Box Score Haverford goalie Joe Banno posted 15 saves and held No. 12 Denison scoreless over the final 18 minutes of play, resulting in a 10-7 loss to the eighth-ranked Fords from Swan Field in Haverford, Pa.
The match-up of two of the nation's top teams was marred by 17 penalties and some offensive shooting woes by the Big Red. Things weren't all bad for DU as they jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one quarter thanks to goals by Chapin Speidel, Alex Hardt and Emmett Jones. Jones' goal came with just five seconds left in the quarter off a feed from senior middie Tanner Smith.
Early in the second quarter things continued to go the Big Red's way as Colin Molloy sent a shot past Banno at the 13:04 mark to lift his squad to a 4-2 lead. Just as Denison appeared to be building momentum, Haverford struck right back when Robert Breckenridge won the ensuing face-off and took off down the field to find Myles Monaghan for their third goal of the contest.
With 11:32 left in the second quarter, Smith scored on an unassisted goal to give DU a 5-3 lead and would be all of the scoring for the Big Red for the next 21 minutes as the Fords put together a 5-0 run which spanned the majority of the second and third quarters.
Trailing 8-5, the Big Red were forced to play the comeback kids and Smith and Molloy's goals at 4:22 and 3:00 in the third quarter, respectively, brought DU back within one goal at 8-7 late in the third.
As quickly as Denison got back into the game, Haverford would answer with two goals over the final 1:11 of the period, pushing their lead back to 10-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter DU would outshoot Haverford 11-4 and both teams committed five turnovers but six saves by Banno and an 0-for-2 showing while in man-up would doom the Big Red.
The two teams combined to go just 3-for-17 in extra-man situations as DU finished 1-for-6 and Haverford was 2-for-11. Denison outshot Haverford 39-37 but were 7-for-19 at the face-off X.
Between the pipes, Denison starter Gregg Shannon turned in six saves while allowing eight goals in 40 minutes of action. Sophomore Nick Petracca played the final 20 minutes and allowed two goals while stopping three shots.
Smith led all Denison players with two goals, one assist and four ground balls. Monaghan paced the Fords (5-1) with three goals.
The Big Red (2-1) will continue their spring break trip on Wednesday when they take on St. Mary's (Md.) at 12 p.m. at Severn School in Severna Park, Md.
