Box Score The ninth-ranked Denison women's basketball team logged their 21st victory over the season following a 61-46 win over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wooster on Saturday afternoon from Timken Gymnasium in Wooster, Ohio. With the win, the Big Red improve to 21-0 on the year and a perfect 10-0 in NCAC action.
Following a sluggish start to the first half, Denison erupted for 15 unanswered points en route to taking a 23-8 lead with five and a half left in the opening frame. During DU's eight minute run, the Fighting Scots went 0-for-8 from the field and committed four turnovers. Senior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored seven points during the offensive surge that helped the Big Red take a 32-15 lead into the break.
Denison maintained a double-digit lead for the entire second half, including a 24-point advantage five and a half minutes into the period. Wooster trimmed the gap to 15 on two separate occasions, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome.
As a team, the Big Red shot 36 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line, while the Scots converted 35 percent from the floor and 64 percent from the charity stripe. DU outrebounded Wooster 43-33, including a 20-12 edge on the offensive glass. Denison also turned 16 Fighting Scot turnovers into 20 points.
Kaiser led all scorers with a 18 points on 7-of-16 from the floor. At the 7:19 mark of the second half, the Ostrander native knocked down a 3-pointer that moved her into third place on Denison's all-time scoring list, passing former DU standout Kristen Sheffield. Junior Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) chipped in 10 points, while Lucy Follansbee (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall School) added seven. Nicole Coggins (Mesa, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) and Jessica Grzybowski (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) dished out eight assists and Follanbee registered a career-high tying five blocks.
Kristen Schwartz and Jessica Wingen paced Wooster with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The duo also grabbed six boards apiece.
The Big Red enter the final two weeks of the regular season with a three-game lead in the conference. Denison returns to the hardwood on Wednesday (Feb. 9) when they travel to Gambier, Ohio to take on NCAC rival Kenyon College. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
