Big Red clinch NCAC title with win over Allegheny

Box Score

Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) scored 16 points and five players scored in double figures as the 11th ranked Denison women's basketball team clinched the 2010-11 North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 78-55 win over Allegheny.

The win stretches Denison's winning streak to 23 consecutive contests and with just two regular season conference games left on the schedule, the Big Red have the opportunity to become the first team in the history of the NCAC to complete a perfect regular season in women's basketball.  This is Denison's third regular season NCAC title.  Their previous two crowns were earned in 2006-07 and 2008-09.

On Saturday in Meadville the Big Red forced the Gators into nine turnovers in the opening 12 minutes of the contest and DU turned those miscues into a 13-point lead at halftime.

The second half saw Denison continue to push their lead out to as much as 26 points thanks to some sharp-shooting by Nicole Coggins (Mesa, Ariz./Corona Del Sol), Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate), and Nuzzo.  For the game, Denison caused 19 Gator turnovers which resulted in 24 points for DU.  The Denison bench also scored 21 points which were fueled by Dahlgard's 12 markers.

Nuzzo's 16 points came off a 6-of-10 shooting night.  She was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and also added six assists while committing just one turnover in 30 minutes of action.  Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) followed with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals.  Junior post Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) chipped in 12 points in 19 minutes and Coggins added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Allegheny was led in scoring by Heidi Goeller's 12 points.

DU shot 43 percent from the field while Allegheny was limited to a 33 percent shooting percentage.  The Big Red also controlled the boards 41-35.

Denison will return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 16) when they host Wittenberg at 8 p.m.
