No. 11 DePauw takes out Denison in first NCAC clash

Box Score

It was billed as a rivalry game the moment DePauw accepted the offer to join the North Coast Athletic Conference.  On Saturday in Greencastle, Ind., the 11th ranked Tigers took round one with a 58-45 victory over the Big Red.

DePauw held Denison to a season-low 31 percent from the field and controlled the boards 45-29 en route to the conference victory.  The Tigers jumped out to a 31-17 halftime lead and they did it by going inside and staying inside.

DePauw would attempt just five 3-pointers the entire game and 38 of its 58 points would come in the paint.  On the flip side, Denison lived and today, died, by the 3-point field goal, struggling to a 4-for-26 showing.

On the inside Denison did get a strong effort from sophomore Jane Windler who scored 12 points and led the team with nine rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.  Junior guard Nicole Coggins snuck into double figures with 10 points to round out the Big Red scoring.

DePauw got 15 points from Katie Aldrich and 14 points and six rebounds from Kathleen Molloy.  Ellie Pearson led the way with 10 rebounds and Kate Walker contributed six assists, five steals and six rebounds in 27 minutes.

The Tigers shot 41 percent for the game and were 11-for-14 from the free throw line.  Denison was 18-for-58 (.310) and were 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The loss drops Denison's record to 4-3 while DePauw improves to 5-1.  The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Delaware for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Ohio Wesleyan.
